Thank you for all of your responses. I was happy to see a crowded comment section. The answer that I was looking for was satyagraha. However, “passive resistance” is an acceptable English translation (even though the movie Gandhi said that his resistance was not passive, just peaceful).
Antigone Wanders’s Fifth Trivia Tidbit:
This week I led educational programming for seventh graders. At one point, I asked my students to tell me where countries that we had discussed were located on a world map. They simply had to choose the correct continent and identify the general region where each country was located. I would like you to guess which countries students had trouble locating.
And now the news from the farm:
Today, I had an extremely relaxing day-off. If I were not ambitious, a day like today would have motivated me to spend the rest of my life on an organic farm. Here is what I did:
Last night:
I danced in a pasture until 1 am.
This morning:
I started to read Candide by Voltaire. Then I watched the movie Elizabeth.
Lunchtime:
I went to the garden and picked fresh onions, tomatoes, and grapes. Afterwards, I used my harvest and fresh garlic and basil to make pasta sauce.
This afternoon:
I discussed regional attitudes towards education with my housemates. Then I went on a long bike ride. While I was biking, I discovered a trail in the forest. I followed the trail until I came upon a stream. I wanted to follow the trail, but I felt like I had to continue my bike ride. Then I remember that I had no plans for the rest of the day. I could follow any trail I wanted as long as I had enough energy.
This evening:
I went to a grocery store, a buffalo farm, and a Chinese restaurant.

oh my goodness your day sounds amazing. can I live on an organic farm?
so my guess would be Africa. It's sad but I bet some of them thought South America was Africa or had no idea what so ever.
I'm so jealous!!!!! What a wonderful time it sounds like you're having. Go Haley!
Trivia Quiz Guesses:
What country did 7th graders struggle to locate on a world map?
My top 4 guesses:
a. Mexico...
b. Los Angeles...
c. Liberty...
d. Bushdisasteristan...
hmmm...you could touch anywhere on the map and you'd get answer D right... since liberty isn't free, it's probably in a shopping mall, and everyone knows where the mall is... Los Angeles is always on TV...
That leaves a) Mexico.
It's so nice to see you relaxed!
I'm going to guess that the seventh-graders couldn't identify Southeast Asian countries and Middle Eastern countries. And African countries. Just speaking from personal experience.
Aha...Satyagraha...cooool.
I like the idea of you wandering around on a bike...don't get too lost...but how nice it must be to go on those adventures!
For the trivia question...Iraq/Iran...China... Canada?
What were you doing out at 1 am Young Lady?
I would guess the countries of central Africa -- unless you included countries in the South Pacific.
I'm curious to know what types of onions and tomatoes you grow. How do you guys decide what varieties to plant?
oh my gosh! that bike ride sounds like SO much fun! I wish I were out there (though I sort of am in a far off way since I do live on a farm)! sounds like you have been having a great time though!
My guess would be Africa or Canada. But I hope not the US!!!!
Yay for Haley. It's nice to hear that you were able to follow a path as far as you wanted. The dogs are missing you very much, and Bries wanted to send you a dead chipmunk as a gift, but I explained how that might be a bad idea. Gwennie sends you her love as well, and wonders what sorts of treats there are on your farm.
Sophie's World is great. Thanks for the suggestion.
I keep thinking the title ought to be Antigone Wonders.
Uncle Dave (who works on an organic farm too)
You are learning the new world of organic farming and I guess I am learning the new world of blogging. I have been sending my messages into the ether,I guess. I had picked satyagraha sp? and salt march. I will try to stay more current with all your wonderful adventures.
The village I visited in Kenya, and where I am now assisting with an orphans feeding program, received several heifers from us through Heifers International last year. Unfortunately they have had trouble raising the napier grass necessary to feed them, but they have sent two of their young people to be trained in raising grass and we are hoping that will make a difference. In the meantime they are trying to raise chickens for eggs which are doing well.
Let me ask you a question that is sort of related to farming and global warming. The Wall St. Journal reports today that grocery prices are soaring, which will affect us as consumers and also those throughout the world. My question is what aspect of our current farm policy is producing this result? The question is timely since our agricultural policy is up for renewal by congress this year. The House passed a terrible (to me) bill and the Senate is now considering it.
I'm glad Louise responded to you - I really hope we can go down to David's sometime. Lots of love, Mimi
